Meet our Swans

Meet Charlie and Flo

Sunset’s Swan Pond is home to two mute swans year round. The swans are Charlie and Flo, proudly named after Charles and Florence Darby who acquired the Memorial Park in 1960.

Our iconic swans and their home have become a community treasure. In the spring, they make a nest out of straw and lay eggs. The community looks forward to the arrival of the baby swans, called cygnets, in late May.

Whether it be attending one of our free family events, having lunch at the picnic tables, or taking photos for special occasions, we invite you to visit the park.

Is it okay to feed the swans?

Yes! Charlie and Flo like to eat grain, lettuce, bread, and cereal.

Although we feed them daily, we invite you to feed them when you visit.

Swan Improvements

  • The Swan Pond Memorialization Program and Restoring a Community Treasure projects began in 2004. A generous donation from Judy Henk, in memory of her son, Todd Potter, allowed for the construction of a beautiful gazebo. It was erected on August 21, which would have been Todd’s 40th birthday.
  • Since then, there have been improvements to the landscaping, fountain and swan habitat. With the help of donations, we’ve also added a play area for children to climb and swing. In August 2014, we added a pergola to give the swans more protection.
