Mikel Cannon Obituary

Oakwood – Mikel Jay Cannon, 78, of Oakwood passed away at 2:30 AM on Sunday, May 9, 2021 at his home with his family by his side.

Mike was born on February 1, 1943 the son of Leland and Dorothy (Seymour) Cannon in Ann Arbor, MI. He married Mary Kay Dodson on September 14, 1963 in Danville, IL and she survives.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kay Cannon of Oakwood, two daughters, Christine (Dan) Schmidt of Valparaiso, IN, and Cathi (David) Fritz of Oakwood, IL, four grandchildren, Jack Fritz, Lauren Schmidt, Annalise Fritz and Tyler Schmidt, his dog “Tate” as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Larry Cannon and Steve Cannon.

Mike was a licensed Barber and Cosmetologist for over 62 years.  Mike loved his work; it gave him the opportunity to talk to people every day which was his great joy. Mike was a wonderful husband, amazing Dad to Chris and Cathi and world’s most fun Poppy to his four beloved grandchildren.

Mike was saved by the precious blood of Jesus when he was 18 years old. He is home with his Lord and Savior now. 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Oakwood, Illinois 105 East S. Main St. Oakwood, Illinois 61858.  Patti Wise will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the funeral home in Oakwood.

It is kindly requested that those in attendance of the visitation or service wear a mask and practice social distancing.
