Karen Astell Obituary

Karen Louise Astell, 75, of Covington, IN, passed away at 2:29 PM on Monday, March 2, 2020 at OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center in Danville.

She was born on September 23, 1944 in Danville, the daughter of Karl and Mildred (Cotton) Jahnke. Karen married Richard L. Astell on October 31, 1965 in Hillsboro, IN and they divorced in 1989. She married Bill R. Sherman on April 18, 2007 in Forsyth, MO. He survives.

Also surviving are a niece, Thelma Marie (Glenn) Emily of Clarksville, IN, nephew, Kenny Jahnke of Henryville, IN, stepdaughter, Candy Ross and a step-son, Billy R. Sherman II both of Urbana, as well as several cousins.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Keith Jahnke.

Karen graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1962 and attended Utterbach Business College and DACC in Danville. She was a bookkeeper for Jules Straus for 6 years, Interstate Sand and Gravel for 15 years and retired in 2009, due to declining health from Steel Grip Inc. where she was a purchasing agent.

She was a member of West Lebanon Christian Church and had owned Karen’s Countryside Gifts for 10 years. She enjoyed going to the Covered Bridge Festival, square dancing, NASCAR and Indy Racing, playing dominos and cards with family and friends as well as traveling.

A celebration of Karen’s life will be held at 2:00 PM EST on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Covington 420 3rd St. Covington, IN 47932 with Pastor Joe Humrichous officiating. Visitation will be held from 1-2 PM EST prior to the service. She will be laid to rest at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Covington.
