Phyllis Haurez

September 27, 1934 ~ October 25, 2019 (age 85)

Phyllis Haurez, 85, passed away on October 25,2019 at the Lutheran Community Home in Seymour, Indiana.  Phyllis Haurez was born on September 27, 1934 in Turlock, CA to Oscar & Ruth (Bidstrup) Dahlquist.  She grew up on a dairy farm in the San Joaquin Valley.  Phyllis graduated from Hilmar High School in CA in 1952.  She was a 1956 graduate of San Jose State College. She taught for six years in Hayward, CA.  Then in 1962 she went to Germany with the Department of Defense and taught at the Hahn Air base for two years. She taught for another year in England at the Lakenheath Air base before returning home to teach in Turlock for two years.  While teaching overseas, she enjoyed visiting many of the countries on weekend trips with friends.  She married Robert Haurez in 1967 and moved to Danville, IL. where she lived for 40 years.  She taught at Diamond Grade school, First Baptist Day school, and served as principal for a short time of First Baptist School.  She retired in 1995 after 36 years of teaching.  Phyllis was named to the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1996 after her retirement.  Phyllis and Bob moved to Seymour, Indiana in 2007 to be closer to her grandson.   Phyllis loved teaching children throughout her life and found great joy in teaching Sunday school even after her retirement as a teacher at school.  Her patience was matched only by her kind and gentle way.  Among her favorite pass times were knitting, yardwork, reading, scrapbooking, and traveling with her husband after retirement.  Her greatest joys in life came from family and friends.  Although apprehensive about her son joining the Marines, one of her proudest moments in life was attending Randall’s Marine Corp graduation in San Diego, CA.  Time spent with her grandson, Coleman, during his toddler years again gave her the opportunity to teach.  Among the many things she taught him were how to play chess and how to write in cursive.   She never tired of reading Dr. Seuss and Where’s Waldo, no matter how many times he asked.  As he grew older she enjoyed attending school events, especially Grandparents Day.

Preceding her in death include both of her parents Oscar and Ruth Dahlquist, her brother Darrel Dahlquist, and her husband Robert Haurez.

She is survived by her son, Randall (Deseree) Haurez, of Commiskey, IN one grandson, Coleman Haurez, of Commiskey, IN, nieces Shelly (Jerry) Schmidt of Cincinatti, OH, Robin (Kurt) Lauck of Turlock, CA, Stacy (Jeff) Blanton of Portland, OR, and Darla Dahlquist of Turlock, CA, and several great nieces and nephews.
